Drug Abuse and Intervention in the Workplace

Learn the signs of and solutions to an employee using drugs while on the job. Find out how "personal time use" can affect job performance, professional relationships, career planning and more.

Advocacy

NCADD has provided guidance to local and state government leaders through initiatives that reduce the impact of alcohol and tobacco on communities throughout the state. Advocating for policy change is a macro prevention strategy that results in the change of community values and behavior. This long term strategy has influenced the availability and cost (use) of products that have the potential to harm health and community well-being.

Reconnecting Youth

Reconnecting Youth is a school-based prevention program targeted at freshmen and sophomores at Juneau-Douglas High School who show signs of poor school performance, potential for dropping out or multiple problem behaviors. The program encourages the students to develop and strengthen mood control, to decrease or stop drug involvement and to improve overall school performance (including grade point average and attendance). The students work on these goals in small groups which meet 2-3 times per week and are facilitated by adults. The curriculum and group bonding are reinforced by 2 ½ day retreats where the students work on drug use prevention and other healthy life choices.

Project ALERT

Middle school students at D'Zank ti Heeni and Floyd Dryden are participating in Project ALERT, a school-based program which uses social resistance to decrease students' experimentation and involvement with cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana. The Project ALERT lessons use a video and then group activity and discussion facilitated by a prevention specialist 3 times a week. The curriculum consists of 8 lessons the student's first year followed by 3 "booster" sessions in the second year.

Media

NCADD uses the media to encourage the public understanding of addictions, the impact of abuse and addiction on the community, and to overcome disinformation and stigma associated with these conditions. The media is used to promote community support for many of the disease prevention and health promotion initiatives at NCADD. Radio, television, print, and internet media are produced at NCADD or obtained from federal health agencies. NCADD contracts with a number of federal and state agencies to coordinate regional and statewide campaigns.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Prevention

Clients who are referred to the ASAP department take part in a FAS prevention program. The goal of the program is to educate individuals who are engaging in high-risk behaviors about FAS in order to lower its incidence. The clients are referred by the Alaska court system, after having been charged with some type of high-risk behavior such as minor consumption of alcohol or others that warrant a need for FAS education. Upon their initial appointment with ASAP, the client takes a 10 question pre-test about fetal alcohol exposure and its effects. Then the client and the ASAP representative go over the answers to ensure that the client has correct information about the condition. Then the client watches a 10-minute educational video about FAS. Finally, the client takes a post-test, to reinforce the facts of the condition and discover any misconceptions they may have had before the course.

Alaska Teen Institutes

The teens in the CHOICE program at Juneau-Douglas High School participate in Alaska Teen Institutes, a series of 2 ½ day retreats which teach healthy lifestyle choices in relation to substance abuse, friend and family relationships, mediation and conflict resolution and more. The institute facilitators are CHOICE teachers, adult volunteers and student representatives of the group Students for Social Responsibility, a JDHS student organization specializing in mediation, peaceful conflict resolution and social activism.

Support Groups

Prevention specialists conduct a number of support groups at Floyd Dryden Middle School for girls at risk for unhealthy behavior such as smoking, skipping school, violent behavior or academic failure. The groups focus on lessons teaching coping and communication skills, drug and alcohol prevention and resistance, self esteem issues, goal-setting and more.
