NCADD of Juneau, Alaska

Tobacco Program

The Tobacco Program at NCADD consists of three components:

  • Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU)
  • Cessation for Court-Ordered Youth Tobacco Infractions
  • Tobacco Control Policy

Teens Against Tobacco Use

TATU is a school-based program that recruits young teens in the high schools and trains them in community advocacy work. The TATU coordinator also trains the teens to teach the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco to elementary school children. Throughout the school year, the TATU group goes to every Juneau elementary school and presents the infamous “pig lung” demonstration. Along with several other demonstrations about the dangers of tobacco, the real pig lungs (one healthy, one filled with nicotine and tar) are used to make an impact in the minds of young children to never start smoking.

Cessation for Court-Ordered Youth Tobacco Infractions

Cessation for court-ordered youth tobacco infractions begins through our JASAP office. When a minor get a tobacco violation, they are referred to JASAP, which then refers the client to either the 3-hour Tobacco Information School (first violation) or the 10-week ASCENT program (second and higher violation).

Tobacco Control Policy

The tobacco control policy program works with changing tobacco policy both locally and regionally. Policy changes include clean indoor air in all public places, advocating for smoke-free public housing, and raising local tobacco taxes to help prevent minors from using tobacco.
